Galle Fort Tour: Dutch Fort Walk, Madu River & Moonstone Mines
Galle Fort walking tour with a private guide, plus Madu River boat ride, turtle hatchery and moonstone mines on the south coast.
Galle Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the south coast, built by the Portuguese and greatly expanded by the Dutch in the 17th century. Its walls enclose cafes, boutiques, churches and ocean views.
What to do
Walk the ramparts at sunset, visit the lighthouse and old Dutch buildings, then explore small shops and cafes. Nearby you can take a Madu River boat ride through mangroves, visit a turtle hatchery and see how moonstone is mined.
Where it fits
Galle is usually combined with Bentota or Mirissa. In our 10-day and 12-day tours, Galle Fort, Madu River and the turtle hatchery are covered on the drive to Bentota.
Tips
Visit in the late afternoon for softer light and cooler temperatures. Wear a hat and sunscreen on the ramparts, and keep small change for local shops.
Frequently asked questions
How long do I need at Galle Fort?
Two to three hours is enough for a walking tour, or half a day if you include cafes and the nearby Madu River.
Can I combine Galle with whale watching?
Yes. Many guests visit Galle on the way between Mirissa and Bentota, and we plan the days to fit.
