When is the best time to visit Sri Lanka? Seasons for beaches, hill country, safaris and whale watching, explained by a local tour guide agency.
Quick answer
Sri Lanka has two monsoons, so there is always a dry coast somewhere. The west and south coasts and the hill country are generally best from about December to March, while the east coast is generally better from roughly April to September.
West and south coast (Bentota, Galle, Mirissa)
Weather is usually sunniest and calmest from around December to March. This is also the main whale watching season in Mirissa, from roughly November to April.
Hill country (Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella)
January to April is typically drier with clearer views. Showers can occur at other times, and mornings are usually the clearest. Pack light rain protection all year.
Wildlife and culture
Yala is generally best in the drier months, with early morning and late afternoon safaris giving better sightings. The elephant gathering at Minneriya is usually seen in the drier months, often mid-year. The cultural triangle around Sigiriya can be visited year-round, but start early to avoid heat.
